\n This is a project by{' '}\n \n Scott Mahr\n \n , a software developer and designer from Victoria, BC, Canada.\n

\n\n

\n Like many, I'm a big fan of the films of the Coen Brothers. I love the\n ease with which they bounce between weighty cinematic masterpieces,\n arty slow-burners, and frivolous comedies. They play within and\n against genre so effortlessly, and there is obvious glee behind every\n line of dialogue and every plot twist.\n

\n

\n It's also clear they have a deep love and respect for the character\n actor. Alongside their long-time casting director Ellen Chenoweth, the\n Coens pepper every film with unforgettable performances by actors\n we've (mostly) never heard of. And often, I've come to notice, these\n character actors show up behind desks.\n

\n

\n They usually appear as clerks or administrators, indifferent faces of\n a higher bureaucratic power, thwarting the goals of an increasingly\n frustrated or desperate protagonist. Other times, they're puzzled\n bystanders, pulled in to a web of cause and effect they barely\n comprehend. And sometimes they're pure comic relief. But they are\n always so pitch-perfect, so distinct and authentic, it's hard to\n conceive of these actors in any other role.\n

\n

\n Like Tarantino's{' '}\n \n trunk shots\n {' '}\n or Wes Anderson's{' '}\n \n symmetry\n {' '}\n (or Michael Bay's{' '}\n \n low-angle 360s\n \n ), I would argue that the character actor behind a desk is a Coen\n Brothers signature. This is my attempt to document them all.\n

\n \n

\n \n Disclaimer: some of these actors are perhaps not\n actually character actors, and some of these desks are perhaps not\n actually desks. Please forgive me.\n \n

\n

\n \n Also: I am happy to go on and on to anyone who\n will listen about the rest of the Coen Brothers character-actor\n scenes that do NOT involve desks. Who can forget the{' '}\n \n \"kinda funny-looking\"\n {' '}\n guy from Fargo? My personal favourites are{' '}\n \n Jackie Treehorn\n {' '}\n in The Big Lebowski and the{' '}\n \n ensemble of communists\n {' '}\n in Hail, Caesar! So good.\n \n
